Time For Personal Bests

Shoot for the moon ...

We are just a month away from the Oxfam Trailwalker event. Many a weekend has gone into preparations, away from family time & chores. And many a personal record created – longest walk, most calories burnt, etc. And, that is not all.

As you see from the updated image above, professional commitment has consumed one of the Team MOTR members. Satya has stepped away from a supporting role, to a primary team member role. While Navin will hop, skip & jump across continents on work.

When I ran my first half marathon (HM), I was thrilled about my new personal record for longest distance covered. Coming after many months of running & training, I had no expectations of bettering this in a hurry.

Now here is the thing about lofty goals – they expand your limits & surprise you by revealing how much more you are capable of!

Within two months, I’ve not only come close to the HM distance 4 times, but also set a new personal best for myself – 27kms. This being walking (& not running) does little to dampen my sense of achievement.

What is even more satisfying is that I’ve not be alone in this journey. All of us in Team MOTR have new personal bests now. And for those of you who don’t personally know the team – for at least one of us, this journey can be compared to Salman Khan giving up the gym to take up long distance running in search of a lean look. Transformative, I’m given to understand, might not be too far fetched.

Silhouettes are probably best suited for black and white conversion. So saved this one for last.

While I have enjoyed the 5 Day of #blackandwhite, I have also realized how much I love color in pictures. Bleeding the blue off the sky or the bright orange off the canyon in the picture above, is just not as satisfying as cranking up the vibrancy. Maybe I haven’t figured out the most suitable category of pictures to convert.  Maybe B&W is an acquired taste. Maybe I need to convert a lot more, before I start enjoying them.

What Gives You Joy?
La Rambla, Barcelona, Spain

The trick is to find the big & small things that give you joy, and build a life that allows you to repeatedly do these things. In the midst of the hustle & bustle of La Rambla, this gentleman’s focus was entirely on his activity. Nothing seemed to come in between him & the pleasure of his smoke. He seemed fulfilled.

What are the activities that take you to a similar place?

PS: It would help if you picked an activity that doesn’t burn you away.

10 Questions That Questioned Us Into A 100km Walk

  1. Normal & more of the same, or scary, new and exciting?
  2. Are we doing / giving enough to a bigger cause?
  3. Is it ever too late to get healthier?
  4. Why not surprise a few people with our choice?
  5. When is the last time we did something for the first time in our lives?
  6. Do we want to just “chill n hang out” or do we want to do something memorable that is worth reminiscing (not to mention boast value)?
  7. When is the last time we stretched out of our comfort zone?
  8. Why not do something that might inspire someone else to go beyond the ordinary?
  9. Is it possible to combine health, good cause and continued good times together?
  10. Isn’t it time we overcame the fear of the different, new and failure, to focus on the right thing to do?
